Exclusive Nilpena Fossil Tour
Saturday 30th March

with specialist guide Ian Hughes, son of NASA funded Dr Mary Droser.
1 departure only | strictly limited numbers
$145pp includes 4WD Transport to the Site | Donation to the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation
Tour departs Parachilna 9am | Duration approx 3 hours

18 year old Ian has spent almost every summer holiday of his life with his mother Dr Mary Droser during her annual research season at the Nilpena Heritage Listed Ediacara Site – Ian, along with other Californian students studied the Ediacara fossils from the Flinders Ranges in their Public Middle School Biology class .

Visiting Palaeobiologist Dr Mary Droser has been working at the Nilpena Fossil Site for 17 years. 'Nilpena holds one of the best fossil records on the planet of any age or any fossil type. These South Australia fossils, the Ediacara Biota, are known to geologists, palaeontologists and biologists worldwide as well as the general public; I have long been funded by NASA to work at Nilpena because these fossils provide such an unparalleled view of the advent of animal life on this planet. (It is much cheaper to go back in time on planet Earth than to visit another planet!). There is nowhere else where we are able to almost literally, pull back the pages of geologic time and witness how animal life first evolved on Earth.'
Dr Mary’s interest in palaeontology stems from her childhood - and lifelong - interest in marine biology. 'The fossil beds at Nilpena are the closest I have ever come to feeling like I was actually snorkeling or diving in the fossil record!
The Nilpena fossils are such an amazing part of Australia’s heritage and they never disappoint!'
