Parachilna is the perfect touring base.

Not only do you have the chance to sample the pleasures of the Prairie Hotel – you are also within easy reach of some of the most spectacular scenery and special Australian Outback experiences.

You can take day trips into the desert, into gorges, up mountain ranges, fly, walk or ride a horse over the landscape, discover ancient art, fossils, colourful wildlife and even more colourful characters.

Here are some ideas to consider:

Bushwalking

Many believe this region to be one of the world’s best for bushwalkers.

  • Pack a Prairie lunch, drive to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges National Park and take one of the walking trails to St Mary's Peak or…..
  • Take a walk around the historic mining town of Blinman or….
  • Walk through the Parachilna Gorge to the Blinman Pools waterfall – one of the best walks in the area
  • Find a secluded waterhole in Brachina Gorge for a swim during a mild winter or hot summer day
  • Enjoy another spectacular sunset while enjoying your "feral antipasto" and chilled champagne, specially packed by the Prairie kitchen

Ask the hotel staff for maps

Scenic flights – Lake Eyre, Wilpena Pound or private itineraries
You could take short a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound or longer tours from the airstrip almost at the door of the hotel. Soaring like a local eagle over this ruggedly beautiful landscape is unforgettable – and don’t forget your camera. Rainbow-coloured mountains and parrots…eagles circling the peaks… roos bounding through the bush… and below a vast sea of ochre desert stretching to infinity.

Lake Eyre is a once in a lifetime experience – there are special weekend packages available see the Tours Packages section of this website.

Mountain bike riding
With a hired set of wheels and a good level of fitness, you can tackle mountains - cruise along flat desert roads at a gentler pace. The best way to see the countryside.

Bring your own or hire a bike from Rawnsley Park Station

4WD touring
All you need is a good map and the latest reports on road conditions (essential for picking the best route). You can reach many of the major sights – including Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola – by conventional vehicle. Seek local knowledge wherever possible to get the best from your trip.
A self drive trip through Brachina and Parachilna Gorge in the spectacular Flinders Ranges National Park will usually take about a day. Stop for a picnic lunch and search for the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby.
Ask the staff for a good map and a few more hints on the best trips or how you can join a 4WD tour.

However there is nothing like really getting outback and getting off the track if you have the 4WD vehicle to do it. There are several private tracks and a unique system of Public Access Routes (PAR’S).

Aboriginal cultural tours
This is an ideal location to learn about this fascinating ancient culture, explore art and camp sites and see wildlife, rocks and Dreamtime stories from a very different perspective. Make your own didgeridoo or boomerang, experience a guided bush walk with members of the Adnyamathanha community, you even get the chance to try the local ‘bush tucker’.
